About the Delaware Valley Rhododendron Society

Hybrid Rhododendron 'Dream of Kings' (Kathleen Frederick)

The Delaware Valley Rhododendron Society was formed in 2023 when the Greater Philadelphia and the Valley Forge Chapters merged. The Greater Philadelphia Chapter was founded in 1957 and the Valley Forge Chapter was founded in 1967. The Delaware Valley Rhododendron Society, officially the Delaware Valley Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, brings together gardeners in the southeast Pennsylvania and nearby regions who are interested in the genus rhododendron--which includes evergreen and deciduous azaleas.

Our monthly meetings (except July and December) and events explore the wealth of rhododendron and azalea species and hybrids, rarely if ever seen in retail garden outlets and that grow so very well in our area. We explore the many beautiful native azaleas. We explore the many plants that are perfect companions to rhododendrons and azaleas. We share plants, we sell plants, we root plants, and we graft plants.

Each spring the American Rhododendron Society has its annual convention. It alternates between the west coast and the east coast. It features outstanding speakers and many fascinating garden tours. The conventions also feature plant sales.

Don't miss our public Annual Plant Sales the first weekend in May each year at Jenkins Arboretum and Tyler Arboretum. Here you can find those hard-to-get rhododendrons, azaleas and companion plants for your garden. The plants you are looking for, and many you have not seen before, are probably there, and the price cannot be beat!

On Mother's Day weekend we have a Rhododendron & Azalea Flower Show at Jenkins Arboretum. The trusses are entered in groupings of similar plants. They are judged and awards and trophies are presented. The show makes a great Mother's Day display.

In the fall we have a Plants-For-Members event where we make available to members plants that are rooted or grafted from cuttings from members gardens. These are varieties seldom ever found in garden centers. We also have a plant auction in which members donate plants to be auctioned off for charity. This event also has members bring cuttings that members can take home and root.

The Delaware Valley Rhododendron Society actively supports the ARS/Tyler Test Garden which was started in 2022. For more information visit ARS/Tyler Rhododendron Test Garden website. The ARS and Tyler Arboretum formed a partnership to establish a test garden for new rhododendron varieties created by Mid-Atlantic hybridizers. The half-acre test and display garden will feature cultivars recently hybridized in the Mid-Atlantic region. For more information visit the article on ARS-Tyler Rhododendron Test Garden in JARS

We have a meeting or other activity most months except July and December. People join for the plants but stay for the friendships.

Interested in joining us? Why not come to our next event, nearly all of which are free and open to the public, or send us an email.
